Allah- God

Dawah- to invite… often connotes sharing Islam (i.e. an invitation to Islam).

Eid- days of celebration after Ramadan and after Hajj

Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Mahgrib, Isha- names of the 5 prayers

Hadithe- written record of the example set by the Prophet Muhammed, pbuh.

Hajj- pilgrimage to Mecca

Halaqa- learning circle/ gathering/ group

Imam- a leader of the community

Iman- faith

InshaAllah- God willing

Khatirah- short talk

Khutbah- sermon, formal public preaching

Qiyam- standing (in prayer)

Quran- muslim Holy book

Ramadan- a holy month during which Muslims fast and try to improve their faith, 10th month of the lunar calendar

s.a.w.- abbreviation for “salla Allah alayhee wa sallam,” which is Arabic for May God’s blessings and peace be upon him (often abbreviated as pbuh).

Taraweeh- late night prayers often done during Ramadan after the night prayer
